HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:

Being a distance learning institution, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) provides education at the doorstep of people. AIOU has an edge over Other universities due to its nationwide access and heterogeneous clientele. Recognizing the growing need for professionally trained specialists in Gender & Women Studies and its significance as an academic discipline, the Department of Gender & Women Studies was established in the faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities in Allama Iqbal Open University in 1997.

What we do

The Aim of the Program

The aim of the program is to encourage women's role in the academic disciplines that have been historically male dominated. Gender and Women Studies expands our definition and perceptions of which we are as women and men and encourage critical analysis of the interplay of gender, class, and race in the society. Furthermore it offers the holistic approach to knowledge by infusing it with a new perspective to shape a better future for all people. The courses are designed thus to encourage further research and analysis on gender and women's status in Pakistani society..

OBJECTIVES:

Introduction to Gender and Women Studies as an academic discipline through distance learning system
Development of courses and programs in the discipline of Gender and Women Studies
Conducting researches, which are related to contemporary gender issues,
Creating awareness and sensitization to gender issues at community level through seminars/conferences and workshops.
